5 Tips for Finding a Therapist That is a Good Fit for You!

Updated: May 19, 2021

Finding a therapist that is right for you can be challenging, but it doesn’t have to be. Here are 5 tips to help you assess if the therapist you are considering might be a good fit or not.

  1. Identify what it is you would like support with. Deciding on the areas you would like to focus on ahead a time before you begin your search for a therapist is crucial in assessing if the therapist can meet your needs or not as each therapist may have different areas of expertise.

  2. Use a directory. Not sure where to find a therapist in your area that focuses on your needs or concerns? There are many directories for therapist. Including but limited to Therapy for Black Girls, Therapy for Black Men, Psychology Today, Therapy Den and etc. These directories allow you to select your criteria and see a list of professionals who meet it.

  3. Read through their website. Most mental health professionals have dedicated an entire website to help you get to know them, their approach, their educational background, areas of expertise, services, and sometimes even their fees.

  4. Schedule a consultation call. Consultation calls are 10–15-minute zoom or phone calls between you and the therapist meant to be a brief “get to know you” session. This is a time for you to share your areas of concerns, ask any pressing questions, and get a feel for the therapist and their therapeutic approach.

  5. Ask yourself “what is drawing me to this therapist?” Is it just because of the price range? Is it just because they have immediate openings? Think of therapy as an investment in yourself, your healing, and your growth. Be careful not to trade quality (the experience and expertise of your therapist) for quantity (the price of the session).
